Advani's career advanced with a critically praised role in the Netflix anthology film Lust Stories (2018), and for playing the leading lady in the Telugu political thriller Bharat Ane Nenu (2018), and the Hindi films Kabir Singh (2019), Good Newwz (2019), Laxmii (2020) and Shershaah (2021).
Early life and background
Kiara Advani was born to Jagdeep Advani, a Sindhi Hindu businessman and Genevieve Jaffrey, a teacher whose father was a Muslim from Lucknow and whose mother was a British Christian.[4][5][6]
Born as Alia Advani, she changed her first name to Kiara prior to the release of her first film, Fugly, in 2014. Her choice of the name was inspired from Priyanka Chopra's character Kiara in the film Anjaana Anjaani (2010). She has stated that it was Salman Khan's suggestion to change her name, as Alia Bhatt was already an established actress.[7][8]
The elder of two siblings, Advani has a younger brother, Mishaal. She is also related to several celebrities through her maternal family. Actors Ashok Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey are her step-great-grandfather and great-uncle, respectively, whereas model Shaheen Jaffrey is her aunt. Her mother Genevieve Advani's step-mother is Bharti Ganguly who is the daughter of Ashok Kumar.[3] In that respect, actress Anuradha Patel, Bharti's daughter from her first marriage, is her step-aunt.
Career
Early career (2014–19)
Advani started her acting career with the Hindi ensemble comedy Fugly (2014).[9] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama said: "Kiara Advani catches you completely unaware" and has the "combination of looks and talent".[10] Mehul S Thakkar of Deccan Chronicle noted her performance as being "very striking" and said she "shows a lot of promise".[11] Fugly underperformed at the box office.[12][13]

2 years later, Advani found her first big breakthrough with the Hindi sports drama M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), a biopic of cricketer M. S. Dhoni who served as the former captain of Indian cricket team.[14] She starred opposite Sushant Singh Rajput (who essayed Dhoni), as the real-life character of his wife, hotel manager Sakshi Rawat. Highly acclaimed, M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story was also a major commercial success with global revenues of over ₹216 crore (US$28 million).[15][16]
In her solo release next year Advani starred as newcomer Mustafa Burmawalla's ladylove in Abbas–Mustan's action thriller Machine (2017).[17] It failed miserably at the box office.[18][19] Advani next ventured on OTT, by teaming up with director and producer Karan Johar for the first of many films, on the Netflix anthological Hindi film Lust Stories (2018), where she starred opposite Vicky Kaushal as his sexually dissatisfied wife.[20][21] Her performance received mixed reactions.[22] Writing for NDTV, Raja Sen found her to be "positively lovely" in it.[23] She also came in limelight with Shahid Kapoor in her debut music video "Urvashi", sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh that was a huge chartbuster.[24][25]
Further success came when Advani progressed to Telugu cinema that year, appearing with Mahesh Babu in the political actioner Bharat Ane Nenu (2018) from Koratala Siva, about a student who unexpectedly becomes chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.[26][27] Janani K of India Today opined that she "shines in her brief role" but added that her character was "more of an eye-candy who doesn't add any purpose to the story".[28] Worldwide, the film earned ₹225 crore (US$30 million), making it one of Telugu cinema's highest grossers.[29][30][31] She, however, failed to replicate this success with her second Telugu actioner, Boyapati Srinu's Vinaya Vidheya Rama (co-starring Ram Charan), that didn't perform well as expected.[32][33] In a scathing review for The Hindu, Sangeetha Devi Dundoo wrote, "It isn't Kiara Advani's fault that she looks lost in the melee."[34] In April 2019 with her return to Hindi cinema, she was seen in an extended cameo in Abhishek Varman's ensemble period saga Kalank opposite Varun Dhawan, produced by Johar.[35]
Rise to prominence (2019–present)

Later in June 2019, Advani received wider attention for Sandeep Reddy Vanga's intense romantic drama Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor as the titular man, and she played his girlfriend Preeti Sikka, a simpleton who leaves him to marry someone else on her family's pressure, provoking him to become alcoholic on a self-destructive path.[36] The film turned out to be the most surprising all time blockbuster of 2019, with a worldwide gross of over ₹378 crore (US$50 million) becoming her highest-grossing release, but critics panned it due to its depiction of misogyny and toxic masculinity.[37] Her final role of 2019 came with her third collaboration with Johar in debutante Raj Mehta's comedy Good Newwz alongside Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, that revolves around two couples tryst with in vitro fertilization.[38][39] Both Kabir Singh and Good Newwz grossed over ₹200 crores each domestically, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.[40]
In 2020, Advani gained mixed reviews for her appearance in Johar's another production Guilty, a Netflix film about sexual assault.[41][42] 2020 also saw her playing the role of Akshay Kumar's wife in Raghava Lawrence's horror comedy Laxmii, in which Kumar's character gets possessed by a transgender ghost.[43] Instead of theatres, Laxmii was directly released on Hotstar owing to COVID-19 pandemic, and met with negative reviews.[44][45] Abir Sengupta's directorial debut Indoo Ki Jawani (2020), one of the first Bollywood films to release in cinemas post theatrical reopening and amid the 50% occupancy guideline due to the pandemic, featured Advani as a Ghaziabad based girl who finds love in dating apps.[46]
Advani next featured in Dharma Productions's war film Shershaah (2021), based on the life of army officer Vikram Batra (played by Sidharth Malhotra), in which she played the role of Batra's girlfriend. The film released digitally on Amazon Prime Video, on which it became the most-watched Indian film.[47][48]
Upcoming projects
In May 2022 Advani will be seen with Kartik Aaryan in the horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.[49][50] First look of her character Reet was revealed on 21 April[51] She has also completed shoot for Dharma Productions two rom-coms Jug Jugg Jeeyo (with Dhawan) and Govinda Naam Mera (with Kaushal), both set for theatrical release in June 2022.[52][53] Advani is set to return to Telugu cinema in an untitled film directed by S. Shankar, co-starring Charan.[54]
