Kadin Chung

J. Kadin Brian Chung (born September 5, 1998) is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a full-back for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer.

Club career

Youth

Chung grew up in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia and began playing soccer with Coquitlam Metro Ford SC at the age of six.[1] He later joined the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program in September 2011, making several appearances with their U-16 and U-18 teams.

Whitecaps FC 2

Whitecaps FC 2 signed Chung during the 2015 USL season and made his debut on September 13, 2015 against Orange County Blues.[2] He would make one more substitute appearance that year.

In the 2016 season, Chung established a starting spot at right-back and made the USL Team of the Week after making a crucial assist on a Kyle Greig goal in a 3–2 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks.[3] Chung, along with fellow Whitecaps Academy products Matthew Baldisimo and Thomas Gardner were praised during the club's USL playoff run in the 2016 USL season[4]

In December 2016, Whitecaps FC 2 announced that Chung would return to the club for the 2017 season.[5] He would spend three seasons with Whitecaps FC 2 before the club ceased operations after the 2017 season.[6] Rather than sign a USL deal with the Whitecaps new affiliate, Fresno FC, Chung would elect to pursue opportunities outside of Canada.[7]

1. FC Kaiserslautern II

On February 5, 2018, Chung signed with 1. FC Kaiserslautern II in Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar.[8]

Pacific FC

On November 29, 2018 Chung was unveiled as the first signing for Pacific FC ahead of their inaugural season in the Canadian Premier League.[9] Chung was a regular starter for Pacific in the club's first year, appearing in 24 games as the team finished in fifth place.[10] Chung returned for the shortened 2020 season, playing in 9 out of Pacific's 11 games, and being named in theTeam of the Week 3 times out of 6, as Pacific finished in fourth place. The 2021 season saw more success, as Chung won the league with Pacific, was named in the Team of the Week 3 times, and established himself as one of the top right backs in the league.

Toronto FC

Chung's play with Pacific attracted the attention of MLS side Toronto FC, and in January 2022, Chung went on trial with Toronto ahead of the 2022 season.[11] He was signed to a deal with the club on February 23, on a contract running through 2023, with options for 2024 and 2025.[12] He made his debut on March 5, coming on as a substitute in a 4-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls.[13][14]

International career

Chung was part of Canada's U-17 squad which participated at the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 Championship. He scored in a 3–1 victory against Haiti and started every game of the tournament at left-back.[15] In 2015, he was named the Canada U17 Male Player of the Year for his performances during the tournament.[16]

On 17 March 2016, he was called up to the Canada U-20 squad in their two games against England and scored a goal to open the scoring in a 2–1 victory.[17] In August 2016, he was called up to the U-20 team for a pair of friendlies against Costa Rica[18] In February 2017, Chung was named to Canada's roster for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship[19]

Chung was named to the Canadian U-23 provisional roster for the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship on February 26, 2020.[20]
