Joseph Srampickal

Joseph Srampickal(Syriac: ܡܵܪܝ ܝܵܘܣܹܦ ܐܲܦܸܣܩܘܿܦܵܐ)[1] is an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic Bishop. He was appointed bishop of the Eparchy of Great Britain in 2016. The Eparchy of Great Britain was erected by Pope Francis in 2016 and Joseph Srampickal is its first bishop.[2][3][4][5]

Early life

Joseph Srampickal was born in Srampickal family of Pala a branch of ancient Palackal family of Pallipuram, on 30 May 1967 in Poovarany, in the Eparchy of Palai.[6]

Education

He studied philosophy at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, and theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate in biblical theology. He continued his studies at Oxford (England).[7]

Priesthood

Ordained a priest on 12 August 2000, he has held the following positions: Professor at the minor seminary and Ephrem Formation Centre of Pala; Director of the Mar Sleeva Nursing College, Cherpumkal; Director of the Evangelization Programme; Secretary of the Bishop; Pastor at Urulikunnam. From 2013, he was Vice Rector of the Pontifical Urbaniana College of the Propaganda Fide, Rome.[8]

Episcopate

He was Appointed Bishop of Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Great Britain on 28 July 2016 by Pope Francis and ordained bishop on 9 October 2015 by George Alencherry. [9][10][11][12]

Bishop Joseph Srampickal greets Pope Francis during the Missionaries of Mercy reunion in Rome following the feast of Divine Mercy. During the Year of Mercy, then Fr Joseph was one of the specially selected priests who have been granted the authority to pardon even those sins reserved to the Holy See
