John West (son of Cockacoeske)
John West (1657–1716) was the illegitimate son of John West and Cockacoeske, who played an important role in the Treaty of 1677, signing with his mother.[1]
He was the heir apparent to become the next Chief of the Pamunkey, but declined when the time came due to his preference for the English way of life, the Chiefdom instead passing to his cousin Queen Betty/Ann.[2]
He was a captain and later Major in the Stafford County militia.
He was largely involved in local politics, especially in relations between the Indians and the English, in which capacity he served as an important intermediary due to his mixed background.[2]
