John P. Dolan

John Patrick Dolan (born June 8, 1962) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of San Diego in California since 2017.

Early life and education

Dolan was born June 8, 1962, in San Diego.[1] His parents are Catherine and Gerald Dolan. Dolan is the seventh of nine children. Dolan attended the School of the Madeleine at St. Mary Magdalene Parish in San Diego, then entered the University of San Diego High School. After graduating in 1981, Dolan enrolled in St. Francis Seminary, a house of formation on the University of San Diego (USD) campus.

After receiving a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1985, he entered Saint Patrick's Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California. After completing his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees in 1989, he was ordained for the Diocese of San Diego.[1]

Priesthood

On July 1, 1989, Dolan was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of San Diego by Bishop Leo Maher.[1]

Episcopacy

Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego

On April 19, 2017, Pope Francis appointed Dolan as an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of San Diego and titular bishop of Uchi Maius.[2][3] On June 8, 2017, he was consecrated as bishop by Bishop Robert W. McElroy. Dolan is currently serving as vicar general, vicar for clergy and moderator of the curia.
