John Jackson (Virgin Islands boxer)

John Jackson (born January 16, 1989) is a professional boxer from the Virgin Islands who qualified for, and boxed in, the 2008 Olympics at welterweight. His brother Julius Jackson competes at light-heavyweight, and they are both sons of hard-hitting, boxer Julian Jackson. He is currently jailed and facing a minimum 15-year sentence for allegedly raping a 15-year old girl, and producing child pornography. He challenged once for the WBC super welterweight title in 2016.

Arrest

On February 6, 2019, the Virgin Islands Police Department arrested John A. Jackson, a 30-year-old St. Thomas man, and charged him with having sex with a 15-year-old girl.[1] According to numerous outlets in the Virgin Islands, John Jackson is facing a minimum 15-year sentence in federal prison after being indicted on charges of sexual offenses against a minor.

On February 23, 2019, Jackson was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations for the production of child pornography stemming from a sexual offense against a 15-year old girl.[2]

On April 18, 2019, Jackson was issued a ten-count indictment, charging him with two counts of production of child pornography, three counts of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, one count of first-degree rape, and three counts of second-degree aggravated rape.[3][4]

In 2021, it was reported that Jackson is coming close to a trial date, originally scheduled for February 8, but pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.[5]

Career

At the PanAm Games in 2007 his first bout was against favourite Demetrius Andrade; Jackson was beaten 5:23. At the 2007 World Championships he again lost in the first round, this time to Aliasker Bashirov.

At the first Olympic qualifier in March 2008, however, he defeated Argentinian Diego Chaves and PanAm Champion Pedro Lima 19:10 to qualify. He lost to Cuban Carlos Banteaux, but this did not affect his qualification. In Beijing he upset Magomed Nurutdinov 4:2 but lost 0:10 to Kim Jung-Joo.

Professional career

Jackson turned pro in 2009. His professional record is 21 wins, with 16 coming via the way of knockout, and 4 losses. He lost a controversial decision to Willie Nelson and lost on a 5th-round KO to Andy Lee.

Jackson vs. Charlo

In May 2016 Jackson suffered the 3rd defeat of his career to Jermell Charlo, in a fight for the vacant WBC super welterweight title, getting stopped in the 8th round. Before the stoppage, Jackson was outboxing Charlo and led on all three scorecards 69-64.[6]
