Joe McElveen
Joseph T. McElveen, Jr. (born October 19, 1946) is an American Politician and the Former Mayor of Sumter, South Carolina who served from November 2000-November 2020.[1][2]

Career
McElveen served on the Sumter City council from 1984 to 1986 until he was elected in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1986 to 1996.[1] In November 2000, He was elected Mayor of Sumter, South Carolina. He announced in January 2020 he will not seek reelection in the November 2020 election.[3]
Personal life
Born in Sumter in 1946,[4] he graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1968. He later earned a Juris Doctor degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1971.[2] He served in the US Air Force until 1977, and received an honourable discharge.[1] Mayor McElveen is married to Kathryn Watson McElveen since 1976, and they have two children together, named Thomas (1978) and Kate (1986).[1]
