Jayde Riviere

Jayde Yuk Fun Riviere (born January 22, 2001) is a Canadian soccer defender for the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Conference and the Canadian women's national team, with whom she won a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Early life

Riviere started playing for West Rouge SC at the age of four, and later represented Pickering SC, Markham SC and the Ontario REX program.[2] As a midfielder Markham SC, where she played from ages 13 to 15, she was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year after scoring 50 goals in a season, averaging 2.5 goals per game.[3] In August 2017, Riviere joined the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Super REX program.[4]

College career

Riviere committed to play soccer at the University of Michigan as a 14-year old in 2014. She received 28 other college soccer scholarship offers before she enrolled at Michigan in the fall of 2019.[3]

By the time she began playing collegiately, she had transitioned to the defender position, at which she started 15 of the 16 games that she appeared in as a Michigan freshman en route to being selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She scored her first career goal in overtime of the Wolverines' semifinal match versus Rutgers in the Big Ten tournament.[5]

International career

In 2016, Riviere won a silver medal at the CONCACAF Under-15 Championships and represented Canada at the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan.[4]

On November 12, 2017, she made her international debut in a 3–1 defeat to the United States.[2] On May 25, 2019, she was named to the roster for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.[6]

Personal life

Riviere's father was born in Dominica, while her mother was born in Hong Kong.[2]
