James R. Scapa

James R. Scapa is an American businessman. He is the Chairman and CEO of Altair Engineering, a company he founded in 1985.[1]

Biography

Scapa grew up in New York City in family of Greek immigrants.[2]

He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1978 and a master of business administration degree from University of Michigan.[3]

He began his career with Ford Motor Company in 1978 as an engineering consultant.[2] In 1985, Scapa founded Altair Engineering, a Michigan-headquartered IT company focused on product design and engineering solutions, enterprise services and cloud computing and has served as Chairman and CEO ever since the founding of the company.[4] He set up the company in Detroit to be close to the automobile industry, and his first customers were General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler, now growing into a clientele of over 8,000 as of 2019.[5] The company initially focused on structural analysis, before moving into the software space in 1989.[6]

The company went public in 2017 on Nasdaq.[7] As of March 2022, his net worth stands at $1.3 billion.[8]

Personal life

In 2018, Scapa acquired a residence in Atherton, California.[9] He has four children, all of whom live in California.[5]
