James F. Lewis

James F. Lewis (1836 – August 17, 1886)[1][2] was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada from 1864 to 1873.[1]

Born in Wales,[2] Lewis moved to Wisconsin, where he served as an assistant attorney general of the state,[1] and then to Nevada in 1862,[2] "When Nevada achieved statehood on October 31, 1864, James F. Lewis, Henry O. Beatty, and C. M. Brosnan were elected to the first Nevada Supreme Court".[3] After retiring from the bench, Lewis returned to private practice, first in Virginia City, Nevada, and then in 1881 moving to Tombstone in the Territory of Arizona.[1] In 1884, Lewis moved to San Francisco, California, where he became a partner in a law firm, remaining in that position until his death at the age of 50, in Fort Yuma, Arizona Territory.[1][2]
