Iraqi Women's Union

Iraqi Women's Union (al-Ittihad al-Nisai al-Iraqi), was an Iraqi women's organization, founded in 1945. It was a leading women's organization in 1940s and 50s, when it played a significant role in Iraqi politics.

It was founded after the Arab Women's Congress in Cairo in 1944.[1] It was created by progressive upper-class women, in a time period when Iraq saw significant improvement in the rights of women.

It was an umbrella organization created to unite all legally sanctioned women's associations and clubs. Its aim was to improve women's health, social, civil, legal, and economic standards through civil and constitutional means. It intended to unite all Iraqi women's groups and initiative contact with other Arab women's groups abroad. It worked to abolish brothels, and to mobilize women as volunteers during national disasters. It campaigned for women's rights, such as to give women more access to child custudo after divorce, to increase their inheritance rights, and to improve the working conditions of nurses. The union demanded amendments to Iraq's constitution regarding women's political equality.
