Sharur

Sharur (Azerbaijani: Şərur (listen)) is the capital town and most populous municipality of Sharur District in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It is located 66 km in the north-west from Nakhchivan, on the Sharur plain. It has a population of 6,964 people.

It was the administrative center of Sharur-Daralagez Uyezd of the Russian Empire (1870-1917).[2]

The town had different names throughout history, including the Armenian names Bashnorashen, Norashen (1930–1964), the Russian names Iliich (Ильич) and Il'ichëvsk (Ильичёвск) (1964–1991) after Vladimir Ilyich Lenin.

According to official information of The State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, on January 1, 2013, the city had a population of about 7,000.[3]

Transportation

Sharur railway station is the terminus of a local service from Nakhchivan.

Due to the closed border with Armenia, the line north toward Masis is unused as far as Yeraskh.
