Background and release
The song's title was unveiled as the seventh track on Adele's fourth studio album, 30, on 1 November 2021.[1][2] Upon the tracklist announcement, "I Drink Wine" began trending on social media platforms worldwide, before being released alongside the album on 19 November 2021.
Adele described "I Drink Wine" as a song about "shedding one's ego", with influences from the work of Elton John and Bernie Taupin in the 1970s.[3] It was largely influenced by Adele's struggles with anxiety after her divorce from Simon Konecki.[4] The song's lyrics pertain to Adele's desire to be more present in her relationship with one of her close friends.[5]
"I Drink Wine" was initially announced as 30's second single.[6] However, "Oh My God" was released as the album's second single instead on 29 November 2021, and "I Drink Wine" was instead promoted to US contemporary hit radio formats on 24 November 2021 as a promotional single.[7] A live performance of the song at the 42nd Brit Awards was released exclusively to YouTube Music for streaming.[8]
Music video
In December 2021, Adele confirmed that a music video for the song had already been shot.[9]
Live performances
“I Drink Wine” was performed live for the first time during the taping of Adele’s CBS special, Adele One Night Only (2021).[10] Adele also sang it during her ITV concert special, An Audience with Adele (2021),[11] and the 2022 BRIT Awards.[12]
Commercial performance
"I Drink Wine" debuted at number ten on the Billboard Global 200. With "Easy on Me" at number one and "Oh My God" debuting at number three, Adele held three simultaneous top-ten hits on the chart. "I Drink Wine" also debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S..[13] In the United Kingdom, "I Drink Wine" debuted at number four on the UK Singles Chart. Adele occupied three of the top five spots on the chart, as "Easy on Me" reigned at number one and "Oh My God" debuted at number two.[14] In the United States, "I Drink Wine" debuted at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Adele's eleventh top 20 hit on the chart.[15]
