It was released on 12 November 1998 by Sony Music Greece and was certified gold on 13 December 2002, having sold 40,000 units over the successive Christmas seasons.[1] It is the only Greek Christmas album that has achieved gold certification.[2] The original album contains 11 Greek versions of well-known international Christmas songs, accompanied by Spiros Labrou's well-known children's choir and by internationally known tenor Konstantinos Paliatsaras on the song "Touli Gia Ton Christouli".[2] The choir had already collaborated with Garbi in the song "Ftou Xeleftheria" from the 1996 album Arhizo Polemo.[3] Well-known lyricist Eleni Giannatsoulia provided the Greek lyrics for all the songs on the album, which is produced by Giannis Doulamis.[2]
Background
In 1998, Spiros Lambrou, a well-known children's choir leader introduced Garbi to many foreign Christmas songs which were until then unknown to her. Lambrou and Garbi's producer Giannis Doulamis selected the songs that were to be translated for the album. Travelling to Australia as part of her world tour in 1998, Garbi listened to the original version of the songs selected by her producer and Lambrou. While Garbi found the songs to be difficult, she fell in-love with various Christmas songs, particularly those by Frank Sinatra such as “Adeste Fideles” which became the main single of the album.[4]
Release
Packaging
Christougenna Me Tin Katy was released on 12 November 1998 in Greece and Cyprus by Columbia Records sublabel of Sony Music Greece.[5] The original album, with artwork by Antonis Glykos and principal photography by Tasos Vrettos is known for its red cover art, featuring Garbi holding a bunch of white Christmas lights.[5] The album was reissued weeks later with alternate artwork, featuring Garbi in a snow globe on a white background.[5]
In November 2007, Sony BMG Greece granted a licensed re-release to Athens-based Espresso newspaper for their Chrisi Diskothiki; the re-release contained the same tracks as the original.[6] The photography used for the 2007 re-release was taken from the artwork of Garbi's 2001 album Apla Ta Pragmata.
On 21 December 2021, Panik Platinum sublabel of Panik Records Greece which had acquired the rights to Sony Music's domestic and international music catelogue in Greece, re-issued Christougenna Me Tin Katy with a new track "Chronia Polla - Carol of the Bells".[7] The cover art of the 12-track release contains a Nutcracker cartoon version of Garbi, which stems from Garbi's line of Garbi-themed smart-phone pictograms titled 'Kaitoji'.[8]
Reception
Christougenna Me Tin Katy debuted at number 4 on IFPI Greek Album Charts spending 10 weeks on the charts over the Christmas and New Year holiday period into 1999. The album re-entered the IFPI Greek Album Charts multiple times over consecutive Christmas seasons between 1999 and 2002, reaching number 21 in 2001 and 5 in 2019.[9] The album finally reached gold certification status in December 2002 and was officially awarded gold status for the shipment of 30,000 units the following year, making it the only Greek Christmas album to be certified gold in Greece.[10][2]
The 2021 reissue of the album debuted at number 25 on the IFPI Top 75 Combined album charts.[11] The reissue has since peaked at number 5 on the album charts.[12]

Singles and music videos
Touli Gia Ton Christouli
Sony Music released the lead single "Touli Gia Ton Christouli" alongside the release of the album in November 1998. The single was accompanied by a music video which featured Garbi, alongside internationally known tenor Konstantinos Paliatsaras and Spiros Labrou's well-known children's choir on a snow-filled mountain. Directed by Giorgos Gavalos and his production company View Studio, the music video was filmed on the Hymettus mountain range in Athens, Greece, featuring artificial snow created by snow machines.[13]
Mega Christmas Special
A television special dedicated to Christougenna Me Tin Katy produced and directed by Giorgos Gavalos and View Studio, premiered on Mega Channel, The special features the music video for "Touli Gia To Christouli", and nine full-length video clips of Garbi singing to the remaining tracks from the album including "Christougenna Xana", "O Ai Vasilis Pali Tha 'Rthei", "Christougenna", and "Ton Christougennon Kampanes". The video clips were filmed in various locations around Athens, including a busy street, in Syntagma Square around the city's large Christmas tree, and in a snow-covered field. Garbi wears a big winter jacket and mist trails from her mouth as she sings due to the cold weather conditions. The transition between songs was filled by a child giving a Christmas wish.[14] While "Touli Gia Ton Christouli" is predominantly screened as a stand-alone clip on television music channels, the remaining clips are only screened as part of a complete television special.
