Hinds County Sheriff's Office

The Hinds County Sheriffs Department is a law enforcement agency in Hinds County, Mississippi, which is charged with the responsibility of providing police services to areas of the county that are unincorporated or in municipalities that do not have their own local police force. It was founded on January 1, 1928.[1]

The current sheriff is Tyree Jones he was elected November 23, 2021. He was elected to serve after the passing of sheriff Lee D. Vance[2] The former sheriff was Tyrone Lewis who took office January 3, 2012. Victor Mason defeated Tyrone Lewis August 4, 2015 as Lewis sought another term. Mason went on to secure the Office November 3, 2015. Mason defeated 3 other candidates securing more than seventy percent of the vote. The sheriff previous to Tyrone Lewis was Malcolm E. McMillin of 20 years.

Victor Mason was defeated in the Democratic Primary on August 27, 2019, by Lee D. Vance.

On August 4, 2021, Sheriff Lee Vance was found deceased at his home after contracting COVID-19.[3] A special election will be held in November for Sheriff.

The county's largest city in population is Jackson, the state's capital.

Fallen officers

Since the establishment of the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, one officer has died while on duty, jailer J. C. Landrum, on Tuesday, September 14, 1954, due to an assault.[6]
