Hanaa and her husband give birth to three more children. In Germany, Hanaa S. lived in Düsseldorf with her husband and children.[1]
Hanaa S. was last seen alive by her neighbors in Solingen on 21 April 2015. Solingen was her last place of residence in Germany. In August 2015, investigators in Croatia caught the 24-year-old brother-in-law of the missing Hanaa S., who had previously been wanted on an international arrest warrant. On November 18, 2015, the police in Düsseldorf arrested the 17-year-old son of the missing person. On February 29/February 1 March 2016, investigators arrested the husband and another brother-in-law of the missing person.[2] In April 2016, the murder case was broadcast in the ZDF television program Aktenzeichen XY … ungelöst.[3]
Court proceedings against the perpetrators
On June 26, 2016, the trial against five suspects began in the district court of Wuppertal. The accused were the man, the son, two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law of the missing Hanaa S. On June 22, 2017, one of the brothers-in-law confessed to murdering Hanaa S. and agreed to lead investigators to the location of the body.[2] He was flown with a police helicopter near Käthchenstadt on the Autobahn and brought the investigators to a piece of forest, but the investigators did not find the body there.[7]
On July 20, 2017, the police found the body of Hanaa S. in a forest near Kronau[2] and transported it to Düsseldorf for the autopsy.[8] According to coroners, the body was wrapped in a rug and tied with duct tape. A rubber strap was also wrapped around the body's neck.[9]
On January 25, 2018, the district court of Wuppertal sentenced four out of five defendants to prison terms. The sister-in-law of the murdered Hanaa S. was acquitted. As the main offender, the 26-year-old brother-in-law received a life sentence. The 20-year-old son of the woman who was killed received a youth sentence of nine years and six months. Hanaa S.'s husband and other brother-in-law were each sentenced to ten years and six months in prison for being an accessory to murder.[4]
