Etymology
The name comes from the nickname of the creator of the dance, Allen "Griddy" Davis.[2] In an interview Davis confirmed this.[3]
Orgins
Allen Davis, a high school football player, was inspired to make his own dance after being inspired by the Nae Nae.[4] Davis created the dance and he uploaded videos to YouTube showing off the dance. Davis happened to be friends with Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. He introduced Chase to the griddy and once Chase got to LSU he introduced fellow wide receiver Justin Jefferson to it.
Popularity
Chase and Jefferson brought the dance to the NFL.[5] The dance became extremely popular among players, celebrities, and fans. The dance was featured in Fortnite, increasing its popularity.[6][7] In 2020 a song titled Right Foot Creep by YoungBoy Never Broke Again was released. The song's lyrics have been synced up with the dance and the song is mostly featured on TikTok videos containing the griddy. In 2022, a collaboration between Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Justin Jefferson, led to the release of Griddy Toast Crunch.[8][9] It was a limited edition of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, with the box having different illustrations. It sold for $50, selling out in an hour and 30 minutes.[10]
