Plot
High school student Shuichi Kagaya receives the ability to transform into a giant monstrous dog. It resembles a mascot costume with a zipper on a back and a big smile on the front. He meets a normal girl from the same class, Claire Aoki, whose sister, Elena, was responsible for killing their parents.
Characters
- Shuichi Kagaya (加賀谷 修一, Kagaya Shuichi)
- Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae,[3] Natsumi Fujiwara (young) (Japanese); Ry McKeand[4] (English)
- One of the high school students with the ability to transform into a dog-like mascot costume, complete with a large pistol on the belt and a zipper up his spine which, any female human climbs inside his empty body, increasing physical and mental abilities. When transformed, Shuichi gains the physical ability of a human at peak levels of fitness, strength and endurance, and when paired with a partner inside him it becomes superhuman. He retains some of his abilities in his human form such as a sense of smell even keener than dogs. His human appearance is average with the exception of a noticeable scar around his neck after fighting with Elena.
- Claire Aoki (青木 紅愛, Aoki Kurea)[lower-alpha 1]
- Voiced by: Nao Tōyama[3] (Japanese); Brittney Karbowski[4] (English)
- After witnessing her sister, Elena, transforming into a monster and killing their parents, she fell into depression and attempted suicide when no one believed her. After Shuichi saves Claire, she gets obsessed with finding Elena and the truth behind the creation of monsters. At first, she was abusive toward Shuichi, viewing him as a tool and nothing more, but over time grew to care about him to the point she swore to kill herself should Shuichi die first so they can stay together. Behind her cheerful, and often perverted personality, Claire possesses a determination to kill anyone without hesitation or remorse, and close herself off from her emotions to an extent that Shuichi finds terrifying. Being a regular human, Claire is physically weak, but when she is inside Shuichi, she takes control of his body movements, and receives a massive boost to physical capability and superhuman level.
- Elena Aoki (青木 江麗奈, Aoki Erena)
- Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa[3] (Japanese); Morgan Laure[4] (English)
- Claire's older sister. After receiving the ability to transform into a ghost, she killed her parents, seemingly for the hypocritical manner in which they raised her and Claire with strict rules despite themselves being terrible people. She loves Claire dearly and may be the only person she is unwilling to harm. Emotionally unstable and psychotic even before becoming a monster she has, according to Shuichi after he scented her clothing, committed a staggering number of murders. Elena is revealed to have been Shuichi's ex-girlfriend and was the one who turned him into a monster so she could climb inside him and truly "become one" with him. The idea that anyone else might be inside Shuichi makes Elena upset. She removes his head and find Claire inside him, and he survives due to some unknown ability of his monster form to keep him alive from experiencing injuries.
- Alien (宇宙人, Uchūjin)
- Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai[5] (Japanese); Kyle Igneczi[4] (English)
- A member of a highly advanced alien species with the ability to grant seemingly any wish in return for finding golden coins containing one of his fellow aliens. Should anyone locate 100 coins he has even offered to grant that person enough power to do almost anything, even destroy a planet should they wish, seemingly with no regard for how such a power may be abused.
- Nana Mifune (三船 奈々, Mifune Nana)
- Voiced by: Miku Itō[5] (Japanese); Xanthe Huynh[4] (English)
- One of the high school students. She is constantly cheerful, enough so Shuichi once felt better about his terrible life just by having a normal conversation with her. It is suggested she has a crush on Shuichi as she was the one to notice how depressed he was while everyone just thought he looked cooler than he had before.
- Abukawa (アブカワ)
- Voiced by: Yoshiaki Hasegawa[5] (Japanese); Nicholas Andrew Louie[4] (English)
- One of the high school students. After betraying Shuichi and siding with Madoka's group, Abukawa dies at the river.
- Hikawa (氷川)
- Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami[5] (Japanese); Dawn M. Bennett[4] (English)
- One of the Gatherers and a selfish student. She uses a coin she asked the Alien for increased speed in order to excel at sports, but dislikes her abilities after it transformed her arms and legs into monster limbs. She is killed by Claire and Shuichi.
- Tadanori Sanbe (三部 忠則, Sanbe Tadanori)
- Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto[5] (Japanese); Kamran Nikhad[6] (English)
- A university student and the first monster siding with Claire and Shuichi. Having found a coin he asked the Alien to make him stronger than anyone else. A martial artist, he created his own martial art style to utilize the strength of his monster body, but finding humans no longer challenged him he has decided to challenge himself against as many monsters as he can. After losing a fight to Claire and Shuichi's teamwork he decided Shuichi was a "real man" and swore to be their ally in finding more coins, even though he himself has no interest in the coins anymore as strength was his only desire.
- Chihiro Yoshioka (吉岡 ちひろ, Yoshioka Chihiro)
- Voiced by: Kana Ichinose[5] (Japanese); Michelle Marie[6] (English)
- A young girl and a member of Koyanagi's Gatherer group. An animal lover with the ability to understand animals. While being human, she has fox ears sprouting on her head, giving her the ability to hear how an animal is feeling. Preferring to keep her ears hidden she usually is seen wearing a motorcycle crash helmet covering her head.
- Ikeuchi (池内)
- Voiced by: Shōya Chiba[5] (Japanese); Daman Mills[6] (English)
- A young man and member of Koyanagi's Gatherer group. A notorious coward he is easily controlled and manipulated by others, especially those he is scared of. He is in love with Chihiro, but gets into a fear. His monster ability lets him transform his head into a surveillance camera which he uses to follow and record Chihiro. Any recording he makes he can upload to computers or wirelessly online. He later betrays the group and dies at the forest.
- Subaru (スバル)
- Voiced by: Yō Taichi[5] (Japanese); Suzie Yeung[6] (English)
- A very powerful Gatherer and Elena's friend. He despises being told what to do and enjoys killing people who try, except for Elena who is the only person he can obey with. Rather than transforming into a monster, Subaru summons and controls two large monsters, a male on the left side and a female on the right, calling his Parents. They are immensely strong and do all by fighting for him while he is kept safe between the palms of the hands the Parents have instead of feet.

Claire draws a pistol and damages his arm, so he reverts into a human and forfeits the battle. He reverts into a monster, so Shuichi and Claire separate to trick him; Shuichi restrains him with Claire pointing the gun at his head, forcing him to admit he lost. Instead of killing him, Claire demands he becomes their ally. Another monster appears, having taken pictures of their human faces so they cannot escape, and demands they become slaves, so Sanbe kills him. Clair realizes too late that the territory markers are actually designed to turn weaker Gatherers into ambushers. They are stopped from escaping by a giant centipede monster named Morita, who captures Koyanagi and tries to convince them to join the group, promising they have no plans to rule the world, they just want to do whatever they want without restraint. He threatens them with the severed head of the Gatherer and restrains Koyanagi, but Yota saves Koyanagi and spares Morita. After burying the member, they leave. Madoka makes them an offer, gather 100 coins for him then he will use the power to grant a wish, though first one of them must die as revenge for Morita, excluding Clair as he can sense she is a ruthless killer and therefore too valuable. Clair lays out the options, either they all die fighting or one of them dies and the rest live with the guilt. Miku, a girl who can turn invisible, suggests she can kill Madoka in his human form, but this is deemed too risky. Clair receives an escape plan for Isao to plant Nerium shrubs and kill Madoka's group. Clair tries to send Shuichi away, believing he is too kind to do what is necessary, but he insists on helping. Clair realizes love can make kind people do ruthless things and wonders about Elena. Ikeuchi abandons the group and is decapitated by Koyanagi's hair necklace. Shuichi sets the shrubs ablaze. Shuichi shares with Clair his desire to keep fighting and become one with her. Chihiro attends the same school as Shuichi. After learning that Abukawa has died at the river, Shuichi confronts the alien and demands to know why he chose a mascot costume. The alien does not answer, but offers to make him human again, if he has a coin to trade, but Shuichi swears to find all coins and revert the world normally. Taguchi, a swordsman, overhears their conversation. He attempts to take an upper hand, but Shuichi kills him. Elena's group learn someone with the power of coins is guarding the alien ship against other Gatherers. Elena's friend, Naoto, reminisces about when he and his friends attended the cram school. Months earlier, Naoto had dated a girl named Aiko, but their other friend, Honoka, vanished. Aiko suggested they not look for her. Finding this strange, Kaito followed Aiko and met the alien who told them Honoka transformed into an Aiko lookalike. Honoka killed Aiko and became the real one herself. Naoto, Shuichi and Elena decided to act as if they knew nothing. However, Kaito killed Honoka in revenge after learning that she buried the real Aiko. Kaito later learned Aiko killed herself and Honoka took advantage of her death to become the new one. Elena, Shuichi and Naoto had already figured that out, and since there was nothing they could do they chose to carry on normally. Overcome with guilt at needlessly killing Honoka, Kaito gave a coin to the alien. Later, rumors spread about a ghostly girl who demanded people identify her name, if they could not they were disintegrated. Shuichi decided if Kaito was responsible he would use a coin to stop him. In the present day, Clair finds a stuffed toy resembling Shuichi, and Chihiro asks Elena on a phone.
13 | "We Two Are One" Transcription: "Futari de Hitotsu" (Japanese: 二人で一つ) | June 28, 2020
Shuichi requests the group for coins and their safety. Clair visits the house and concludes Shuichi is oblivious to how dilapidated it is and the death of his parents, all due to Elena's manipulation. Their hair necklaces fall off, as Koyanagi agrees to give them their coins while secretly planning to give them for Elena. Elena worries if Shuichi remembers the truth the world will end. Shuichi discovers Chihiro giving the coins to Elena. Clair shows the doll to Elena, causing Shuichi to remember. Elena tries to erase their memory, but he and Clair fight back. Elena tells Shuichi that she killed his parents to protect the latter, had she not erased his memory. The girl appears and Shuichi almost calls her Honoka, but Elena insists she is someone else. Elena erases their memories and the girl flees. The truth is finally revealed: Kaito kept all coins, and used the girl to prevent anyone from finding the ship, but by erasing parts of Shuichi's memory, Elena ensured Shuichi was unaware of the ship, keeping him from being targeted unless he remembers. Despite being amnesiac, Shuichi swears to end the game, and goes to the mountain with Claire and Sanbe. |
