George L. Savvides

George L. Savvides (Greek: Γιώργος Λ. Σαββίδης) is the Attorney-General of the Republic of Cyprus.[1][2][3][4] He previously served as Minister of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus.[5][6][7][8]

Education

He has excelled at the Lanition secondary school of Limassol. Having completed his military service, he studied law at University of Exeter in the United Kingdom where he received the title of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. Hons.).[9] He then continued his studies in London and became a barrister as a Member of The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.[10]

Experience

He actively practiced law for 35 years as the founder and managing partner of a law firm with offices in Limassol and Nicosia and is a member of the Famagusta Bar Association and the Cyprus Bar Association.[11] He is also a member of the International Bar Association and has served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of various subcommittees of this international body.

Personal and family life

George L. Savvides was born in 1959. He resided in Famagusta until 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus. Since 1974, he is living in Limassol.[2]

He is married and a father of three children.[2][7]

Political career

He served as a Minister of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus from May 31, 2019 until June 29, 2020, date when he was appointed Attorney General by the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades.

Activities

Savvides was a medallist of Pan-Hellenic athletic games and also a holder of a Cyprus record as a high jump athlete whilst a member of Gymnastic Club Evagoras of Famagusta.[12] He later served as the Secretary of the Club. He has been a member of National Cyprus athletics team for a number of years.[2]
