France in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018

On 12 May 2018, it was announced that France would return to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 which took place on 25 November 2018 in Minsk, Belarus.[1] The French broadcaster France Télévisions was responsible for choosing their entry for the contest. Angélina was internally selected to represent France in Belarus with her song "Jamais sans toi" which was released on 15 October 2018.[2][3][4]

Background

France has sent one French entry to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, competing in the 2004 contest with Thomas Pontier and "Si on voulait bien".[5][6][7] Despite coming sixth, France Télévisions decided to withdraw from the contest after 2004, saying there was no motivation to compete and that "too much Eurovision kills Eurovision".[8][9]

On 18 November 2015, it was revealed that the French broadcaster was interested in returning to the contest. However, they have not revealed any plans yet.[10] France 2 announced on 24 June 2015 that they had no plans to return to the contest, however the broadcaster sent a delegation to Bulgaria to observe the 2015 edition.[11][12]

On 13 May 2016, executive supervisor Jon Ola Sand announced at a press conference, that the EBU were in contact with broadcasters from several countries including France, so that they would participate in the 2016 contest.[13] Edoardo Grassi, the Head of Delegation for France in the Eurovision Song Contest was one of the jury members at the Maltese national selection for the 2016 Junior Eurovision, and was introduced by the hosts of the show as being the Head of Delegation for France in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.[14] The country's return in the 2018 contest was announced on 12 May 2018. Five months later, it was announced that Angélina Nava would represent France in Belarus, with the song "Jamais sans toi". It was released on 15 October 2018.

Angélina Nava (born 4 November 2006[15]) is a French child singer. She represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song "Jamais sans toi".

Angélina has been singing since she was six, performing in numerous musicals and competitions since. At just ten years old, she won the fourth season of The Voice Kids in her country. Outside of singing, she enjoys dancing, piano and comedy.[16]

"Jamais sans toi" is a song by French child singer Angelina (real name: Angélina Nava). It represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

At Junior Eurovision

During the opening ceremony and the running order draw which both took place on 19 November 2018, France was drawn to perform fifteenth on 25 November 2018, following Israel and preceding Macedonia.[17]

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition was used, where the results were determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Every country had a national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten.[18]

The online voting consisted of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 23 November 2018 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances was shown on the contest's website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers could vote. After this, voters also had the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting ended on Sunday 25 November at 15:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting took place during the live show and began right after the last performance and was open for 15 minutes. International viewers were able vote for a minimum of three and a maximum of five songs.[19] They were also able to vote for their own country's song. These votes were then turned into points which were determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 20% of the votes, it received 20% of the available points.
