Food Democracy Now! is a grassroots movement and non-governmental organization based in Iowa, whose stated aim is to build a sustainable food system that protects our natural environment, sustains farmers, and nourishes families.[1] Food Democracy Now! members organize both through online campaigns and in-person actions across the country. Within months after launching, Food Democracy Now! gathered nearly 100,000 signatures in support of 12 candidates for undersecretary appointments in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.[5] The movement has been vocal in its support of small farmers and GMO labelling and is known for its opposition to the Farmer Assurance Provision, often referred to as the "Monsanto Protection Act" by anti-GMO activists,[6] and genetic modification of foods.
