Chala gained Swedish citizenship after he was an unaccompanied refugee child from Ethiopia where he lived near Bekoji at between 2,500 and 3,000 meters altitude, in 2013. He didn't run in Ethiopia but did have a 90-minute walk each way to school. Ebba and his family belong to the Oromo people in Ethiopia. According to Ebba his father was murdered by the country's then ruling group. He himself was imprisoned and tortured, and he does not know how his mother and siblings fared. He found his way to refugee accommodation for unaccompanied children in Salem outside Stockholm and stayed there for a year.[1]

He reached the international qualifying standard for the Olympics in Seville on 23 February 2020.[2]
