Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial

The Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam National Memorial,[1] is a Mausoleum in memory of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam the 11th President of India (2002-2007), in his home town Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. The memorial was constructed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a tribute to Kalam.[2] It was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2017.

Background

In December 2015, after completing the measurement work the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) started the construction work, in July 2016 former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone on the occasion of Kalam's first death anniversary. The DRDO took the task of building the memorial and completed the construction in July 2017 with the cost of 200 millions. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2017.[3]

Structure

The structure is spread across the 2.11 acres of land while the plinth area is 1,425 sq m. The entrance consist of a statue of Kalam playing the Veena. There are two other smaller statues of Kalam in sitting and standing posture. The wooden doors of main entrance resemble the India Gate of Delhi, while the main dome resemble the one of Rashtrapati Bhavan's central dome. There are Four display halls which houses replicas of rockets and missiles, paintings highlights his long association with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. There are Acrylic paintings depicting the Kalam's life cycle.[4]
