History
Formation and early years (1999–2001)
The band was formed by bassist Lance "Kuk" Collier and keyboardist Nathan Church, who were in a local Kansas City band that opened for Slipknot. This put them in touch with Slipknot percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan. The band went through several lineup and name changes before eventually settling on downthesun. The lineup that recorded the band's debut studio album with producer Garth "GGGarth" Richardson in June 2001 consisted of Aaron Peltz (vocals), Satone (vocals), Neil Godfrey (guitar), Lance Collier (bass), Nathan Church (keyboards, samples, vocals), and Danny Spain (drums). In 2001, the band signed to Slipknot's Maggot Recordings label.[2]
Downthesun (2002)
After recording the guitar tracks for their self-titled debut album, Godfrey left the band to join first Motograter and then Lo-Pro. The band then recruited Bruce Swink to handle guitar duties during live shows. Although listed on the album liner notes, Swink did not play on the record. The album was released by Roadrunner Records[3] in 2002.[1]
Breakup and possible reunion (2003–2010)
2003 saw the group experience an exodus of band members, as Aaron Peltz, Satone, Danny Spain, and Bruce Swink all departed. Kuk and Church remained, finding replacements, recording a few demos, and playing live shows, before splitting up in late 2003. In 2010, Peltz and Collier announced that they were reforming the band, though no further news emerged about the group.[4]
Artistry
Style and lyrics
AllMusic compared the band to Slipknot, stating they "make the same kind of ugly alternative metal spliced with the visceral approach of death metal."[1] In 2002, Kuk remarked, "We're ugly, we're fat and we go against everything that rock stardom is supposed to stand for: we are the truth".[3]
