Dick Sheridan (musician)

Richard "Dick" Sheridan (born January 26, 1936, New York City, New York (U.S. state)) is an American jazz drummer.

Biography

Born and raised in Long Island, New York (U.S. state), he took up drums after his grandfather, and became professional at 18 after some formal drum lessons while at college ( 1954, AFM Local 802 [1]). During 1955-56, he joined several big bands Buddy Morrow, Tommy Alexander, Johnny Mercer, Billy May, Gene Williams and Les Elgart.[1] Between several stays in Las Vegas and the Bahamas ( Boyd Raeburn 1959), he led a very active freelancing career with Woody Herman (1960), Barbara Carroll, Joe Marsala, Kai Winding, Nat Pierce, Sal Salvador, Tyree Glenn, Dick Haymes, Gene Quill, Dan Terry (1961). He first records with Dan Terry at that time. Still based in New York, he regularly attended jam sessions at W. Eugene Smith 's Loft [2]

During the sixties, Dick Sheridan went on accompanying many jazz and pop artists like Della Reese, Barbra Streisand, Jack Jones, Carol Sloane,Georgia Brown, Tom Jones and Oscar Brown Jr. In 1967 he played hand percussions with The Supremes at the Copa (different recording from the 1965 album The Supremes at the Copa.[3]

From 1968 to 1979, he mainly performed and recorded with Bobby Short[4] during an extended stay at Cafe Carlyle in New York. Dick Sheridan first worked with Bobby Short in 1959 [5]

He resumed recording in 2005 with his own group.[6]
