Denys Monastyrsky

Denys Anatoliyovych Monastyrsky (Ukrainian: Денис Анатолійович Монастирський) is a Ukrainian lawyer and politician who has been Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs since July 16, 2021.[1][2]

Biography

Monastyrsky was born in Khmelnytsky on 12 June 1980.[3] He is a graduate of Faculty of Law of the Khmelnytsky University of Management and Law.[3] Monastyrsky is also a former student at the Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.[3] He has a PhD in law.[3]

In 2007 Monastyrsky started his career as lawyer.[3] He also headed the department of lawmaking and scientific expertise of the research part of the Khmelnytsky University of Management and Law, where he worked as an associate professor.[4] Monastyrsky is a co-founder and a member of the board of the Podolia Youth Cultural Association "Into the Future through Culture".[3][4]

Between 2014 and 2019 Monastyrsky was an assistant-consultant on voluntary basis of People's Deputy Anton Herashchenko.[4]

In the run up to the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election Monastyrsky was presented as an expert of presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky's "Team" on law enforcement reform.[4] Zelensky won the election and was inaugurated as President of Ukraine on 20 May 2019.[5]

Monastyrsky was a candidate for the Servant of the People party in the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election.[3] He was placed No. 19 on the national election list and elected to the Ukrainian parliament.[3][6] In parliament he became head of the parliamentry Committee on Law Enforcement Affairs.[3] According to an analysis of Civil movement "Chesno" he was one of the people's deputies who submitted the most legislative initiatives.[4]

After on 12 July 2021 Interior Minister Arsen Avakov had submitted his resignation (letter) as Interior Minister,[7] Monastyrsky on 16 July 2021 was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs by 271 MPs.[1][8] Anton Herashchenko became one of his official advisor at the Ministry.[9]
