Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand cricketer)

Daryl Joseph Mitchell (born 20 May 1991) is a New Zealand cricketer who represents Canterbury in domestic cricket, and plays for the national team.[1] He is the son of New Zealand rugby union coach and former player John Mitchell.[2]

Career

In June 2018, he was awarded a contract with Northern Districts for the 2018–19 season.[3] In January 2019, he was named in New Zealand's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against India.[4] He made his T20I debut for New Zealand against India on 6 February 2019.[5] In November 2019, he was added to New Zealand's Test squad for the second Test against England.[6] He made his Test debut for New Zealand, against England, on 29 November 2019.[7]

In June 2020, Mitchell moved from Northern Districts to Canterbury.[8] In November 2020, in the fourth round of the 2020–21 Plunket Shield season, Mitchell took his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, with 5/44 against Otago.[9]

In January 2021, in the second Test against Pakistan, Mitchell scored his first century in Test cricket, with an unbeaten 102 runs.[10] In March 2021, Mitchell was named in New Zealand's One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Bangladesh.[11] He made his ODI debut for New Zealand on 20 March 2021, against Bangladesh.[12] On 26 March 2021, Mitchell scored his first century in ODI cricket, in the third match of the series against Bangladesh.[13]

In May 2021, Mitchell was awarded with his first central contract by New Zealand Cricket, ahead of the 2021–22 season.[14] That month, he was also signed by Middlesex for the latter part of the 2021 t20 Blast.[15]

In August 2021, Mitchell was named in New Zealand's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[16] In the team's semi-final against England, he opened the batting and scored 72 not out, with New Zealand winning the match by five wickets; Mitchell was awarded the player of the match.[17]

In February 2022, he was bought by the Rajasthan Royals in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament.[18]
