Overview

The district's name is derived from the root word "Damal", which means acacia woodland in the Somali language.

Damala Xagare has a population of well over 40,000. The town is located in the Hadeed Plateau, a tract of land that covers the middle of a large area of the Sool Plateau, beginning south of Carmaale village and extending as far as the depression zone south of Hingalol town. Most of this area is covered by gypsum and gypsiferous soils with minor areas of limestone.

Because of its patches of acacia trees, the land is used for communal grazing of livestock. The local community also practices wildlife conservation.

Recent History

In November 2005, the Sanaag region was reported to be experiencing water shortages, and Damala Hagare was one of the worst affected areas.[2]

In March 2013, a peace conference between the Warsangali and Dhulbahante clans was held in Damara Hagare.[3]

In September 2014, Somaliland's Defense Minister attempted to attend a meeting of the Warsangali clans in Hingalol, but was unable to do so and was stranded in Damara Hagale.[4]

In May 2019, Somaliland and Puntland troops clashed in Damala Hagare.[5] The total number of dead on both sides is estimated at about nine.[6] In June, the Somaliland army deployed troops, including armored vehicles, to Yubbe, Hadaftimo, and Damala Hagare for border security from Puntland.[7]

In September 2019, the local community of Damala Hagare passed a resolution against charcoal production, which causes environmental damage.[8]
