Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk, known in Japan as Josou-shite Mendokusai Koto ni Natteru Nekura to Yankee no Ryou Kataomoi,[lower-alpha 1] is a Japanese romantic comedy manga series created by Tooru, published by Mag Garden in MAGXIV since September 10, 2018. Mag Garden has also collected the manga in eight tankōbon volumes, which are planned to be released in English by Seven Seas Entertainment starting in August 2022.

The story follows Yuuma Hanae and Shuumei Satogiri, two young men who fall in love with each other while cross-dressing, both believing the other to be a woman. The series has been well received and was nominated for the Next Manga Award in 2019 and the Denshi Comic awards in 2020.

Premise

Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk is a romantic comedy manga following two young men attending the same school: the gloomy Yuuma Hanae (波苗 憂真, Hanae Yuuma) and the delinquent Shuumei Satogiri (里切 秀明, Satogiri Shuumei). Yuuma works at the Taishō era-themed maid café Roman as a waitress, where he as part of his job wears a kimono-inspired dress and goes by the feminine name Hana (花). Shuumei falls in love with him, believing him to be a woman, and wants to form a relationship. As he is afraid of scaring him, he disguises himself as a woman and begins visiting Roman regularly under the female persona Mei (めい). Yuuma does not realize that Shuumei is not a woman and falls in love with him, too.[1][3]

Although Yuuma dislikes delinquents and Shuumei dislikes gloomy people, the two remain attracted to each other under the belief that the other is a woman and try to keep their identities secret.[1][3] Other characters include Shuumei's childhood friend Yuzuru Tanigami (谷上 弓弦, Tanigami Yuzuru), who sees through Yuuma's and Shuumei's disguises but pretends not to.[3]

Production and release

The series is written and drawn by Tooru[1] and is serialized by Mag Garden in the digital magazine MAGXIV since September 10, 2018.[3][4] Mag Garden has published collected tankōbon volumes of the series since February 9, 2019 under its imprint Blade Comics[5][6] and has released eight volumes as of February 9, 2022.[7] The volumes are planned to be released in English by Seven Seas Entertainment starting in August 2022.[8] Mag Garden has also released art prints and merchandise including badges depicting Crossplay Love characters.[2]

Reception

Crossplay Love was nominated for the 2019 Next Manga Award[17] and the 2020 Denshi Comic awards (電子コミック大賞, Denshi Komikku Taishō, "electronic comics awards"),[18] the latter of which called it a great series with an intriguing premise.[19] The manga's web edition had been viewed 15 million times as of February 2019.[20]
