Development and composition

"Come Together" was written by Brown and H.E.R., and produced by Cardiak and Hitmaka, with additional production by EVO and Isaac Wriston.[1] The song was recorded by Patrizio Pigliapoco at Calabasas Sound in Los Angeles.[1] Musically, "Come Together" is an R&B and soul song,[2] with a production that was defined by HipHopDX's Trent Clark as a "dreamy soundscape of chimes and hypnotic drums".[3] The track's instrumental contains a sample from "Don't Stop" by One Way. The song lasts for three minutes and 54 seconds.[4] During the record the artists croon for their respective love interests to “come together” for the night. Clark defined the lyrical content of the song as "romantic" and "passionate".[3] "Come Together" marks the second collaboration between Brown and H.E.R. following April 2018’s "Focus (Remix)".[5]

Critical reception

"Come Together" garnered positive reviews from music critics. Andy Kellman of AllMusic said that H.E.R. is the "most welcomed" featured artist on Indigo, stating that her verse on the "glowing" song "outclasses" every other guest appearance on the album.[6] HipHopDX's Trent Clark listed the song among the album's best material, saying that "Brown and H.E.R. harmonize their bones perfectly" on the "romantic" record.[3] Cultural critic and media personality Joe Budden said that the song is a "classic R&B jam" that "rightfully honors the romantic roots of the genre", calling it Indigo's best song, alongside "Red".[2] Aida C. of HotNewHipHop noted that on "Come Together" both singers "flaunt their vocal abilities", comparing it to Brown's 2007 single "Take You Down".[7]
