Route description

SH 16 is a four-lane highway in its entire length. It begins at an interchange at I-25 and heads east with a 45 mph speed limit. It crosses over Fountain Creek and then passes over North Santa Fe Avenue (US 85), forming a partial cloverleaf interchange. After the interchange, the speed limit increases to 55 mph and the route makes a southeast trajectory through neighborhoods north of Fountain. SH 16 then turns to the northeast and terminates at an intersection where SH 21 begins and the road becomes Powers Boulevard and Mesa Ridge Parkway continues east.[2]
History
The route was established in 1970 and the first mile was constructed from I-25 east to US 85. It was gradually extended in 2007 from Santa Fe Avenue to Powers Boulevard, when Mesa Ridge Parkway was added to the route, and the route length almost tripled.[2]
Major intersections
The entire route is in Fountain, El Paso County.
