Taxonomy

BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) treats Coeligena consita as a species.[2] However, the South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society (SACC), the International Ornithological Committee (IOC), and the Clements taxonomy consider it to be a subspecies of golden-bellied starfrontlet (C. bonapartei).[3][4][5]

Distribution

Perija Starfrontlet occurs in the Serrania del Perijá along the border of Colombia and Venezuela from an altitude of 2,550 metres (8,370 ft) to 3,025 metres (9,925 ft). Most records come from Chamicero del Perija ProAves Reserve in Colombia; the last record from Venezuela dates back to 1942.[6][7]

Habitat

Information about the Perija Starfrontlet's habitat and ecology are scarce. The species inhabits cloud forest and elfin forest. The population size is estimated as less than 250 mature individuals, but the need for further information on the population size has been identified.[7] The most severe threat to the species is the fragmentation and conversion of its habitat caused by uncontrolled colonisation, which is accompanied by cultivation and cattle-ranching.
