Premise
Thirty years after the Rescue Rangers series ended production, Chip works as an insurance salesman while Dale has had "CGI surgery" and works the convention circuit in hopes of reliving his glory days. When a cast member of the original series mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must reunite with the rest of the group, save their friend and rebuild the two’s friendship.[5]
Cast
- John Mulaney as Chip, the fearless, optimistic, mature leader and co-founder of the Rescue Rangers, with a strong moral standard.[2]
- Tress MacNeille as Chip's series voice, MacNeille briefly reprises her role from the original series.
- Andy Samberg as Dale, Chip's happy-go-lucky best friend and co-founder of the Rescue Rangers, who usually acts before thinking. Dale's present-day appearance is depicted with photorealistic computer-animation rather than cel-shaded animation like the other members of the team. It was explained in the movie as "getting CGI surgery," the equivalent to a plastic surgery.[2]
- Corey Burton as Dale's series voice, Burton briefly reprises his role from the original series.
- KiKi Layne as Ellie Whitfield, a rookie detective and avid fangirl of the Rescue Rangers.[7][8]
- Will Arnett as Mean Dean, a middle-aged and overweight clone of Peter Pan and the main antagonist.
- Eric Bana as Monterey Jack, a cheese-loving Australian mouse and a member of the Rescue Rangers.
- Flula Borg
- Keegan-Michael Key
- Tress MacNeille as Gadget Hackwrench, an inventive mouse and member of the Rescue Rangers, who is the daughter of Geegaw Hackwrench, a close friend of Monterey Jack. MacNeille reprises her role from the original series.[9]
- Tim Robinson
- Seth Rogen as Bob, a motion capture Viking dwarf.
- Rogen also reprises his role as Pumbaa from the 2019 version of The Lion King.
- J. K. Simmons as Lieutenant Putty, a claymation police detective who is a close friend of Chip and Dale.
- Chris Parnell as Jerry, a corporate executive
- Dennis Haysbert[10]
- Corey Burton as Zipper, a housefly and member of the Rescue Rangers, who is Monterey Jack's longtime friend and sidekick who speaks in unintelligible buzzes. Burton reprises his role from the original series.[11]
Additionally, Paula Abdul appears as a de-aged version of herself. Other animated characters within the Disney catalogue include the Three Little Pigs, Scrooge McDuck, Lumiere, Flounder, Baloo from the 2016 version of The Jungle Book, Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, the Colonel, and Roger Rabbit. Non-Disney characters include MC Skat Kat and the Mane Six of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Production
Development and pre-production
On January 31, 2014, it was announced that The Walt Disney Company was developing a live-action movie based on the Disney Afternoon animated series Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers with CGI special effects, similar to 20th Century Fox's Alvin & the Chipmunks film series. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman signed on as its producers, while Robert Rugan was hired to write and direct the film. It would've followed an origin story for the Rescue Rangers.[12]
In May 2019, Akiva Schaffer had closed a deal to replace Rugan as the film's director, while Dan Gregor and Doug Mand became its new writers. Set to follow a "meta, something self-referential and cool" take on the characters. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman returned as its producers, and the project will be a co-production between Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films.[13]
Casting
In November 2020, it was reported that Corey Burton will reprise his role from the series as the voice of Zipper.[11] Though initial reports said that Burton would return as the voice of Dale as well, it was announced in December 2020, that Andy Samberg will provide the voice for the character. John Mulaney as Chip was revealed in the same announcement, and Seth Rogen was announced to be making a cameo in the film.[2] Additional casting was announced with the release of the teaser trailer on February 15, 2022. In April 2022, during the release of a new trailer, it was confirmed that Burton would indeed reprise Dale along with Tress MacNeille reprising Chip for brief dialogue.[14]
Filming
Principal photography commenced on March 16, 2021 in Los Angeles with Larry Fong as cinematographer.[15][16][17]
