Charlotte Andrews Stephens
Charlotte "Lottie" Andrews Stephens (born May 9,1854 in Little Rock, Arkansas; died 17 December 1951) was the first African American to teach in Little Rock.[1] She taught for seventy years and an elementary school was named for her in 1910.[2] She began teaching at fifteen.[3] She was born into slavery, but her father had enthusiasm for both education and the Methodist faith. This helped lead to her career.[4] Among her notable students were black composers Florence Price and William Grant Still.[5]
