Early life

Payne was born in Liverpool in 1981. Initially disinterested in music, Payne pursued a career in visual art, attending art college and working in a vintage clothing shop in Liverpool town centre.[2] However, Payne lost interest in her studies and, after leveraging connections in Liverpool from her family, shifted her interest towards trying out music.

Career

Candie Payne originally began performing with Liverpool band Tramp Attack and Edgar Jones & the Joneses in the early 2000s. She was then introduced to Simon Dine of Noonday Underground with whom she began composing songs.

In 2006, Payne release two singles, "By Tomorrow" and "Take Me". These preceded her debut album, I Wish I Could Have Loved You More, which was released in May 2007. The single version of "One More Chance, followed in September of that year.

Style

Payne hoped to pioneer a genre of "Pop noir", inspired by the soul singers of the 1960s. Her ideals for this genre led her to ban backing vocals, and be wary of 'over-singing,' something she has stated she hates.[3]
