Education

Pettersen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the Metropolitan State University of Denver.[1]

Career

Before running for state representative, Pettersen worked for New Era Colorado, a non-profit progressive political advocacy group that works to increase youth participation in politics and the government process.[2][3]

2013 legislative session

Pettersen sponsored legislation making it easier for taxpayers to put their income tax returns into a college savings account as well as legislation allowing someone who dropped out of high school to finish their education requirements at a community or junior college.[4]

2014 legislative session

Pettersen passed legislation to help more Colorado students get a college education by providing more tuition assistance to low- and middle-income Colorado families. She also sponsored legislation to help struggling families find affordable childcare so that parents can remain in their jobs and continue to pursue their careers.[5]

2018 Congressional Election

On April 9, 2017, following Ed Perlmutter's announcement that he was running for governor of Colorado, Pettersen announced her candidacy for Colorado's 7th congressional district.[6] However, after Perlmutter's announcement to reenter the congressional race, she ended her campaign.[7] In 2018, Pettersen ran for and won Colorado Senate District 22.

2022 Congressional Election

After Ed Perlmutter announced that he would retire from the United States House of Representatives after the 2022 legislative session, Pettersen declared her candidacy for Colorado's 7th congressional district.[8][9] Pettersen has been endorsed by every major Democrat in Colorado, including retiring Rep. Perlmutter. After the 2020 redistricting process in Colorado, the 7th Congressional District has become one of the most competitive in the country, having been named a targeted race by both national Democrats and Republicans. She is the only Democrat on the primary ballot having won 99.5% of the vote at assembly.

Personal life

In 2017, Pettersen married Ian Silverii, the executive director of ProgressNow Colorado, at the Colorado Governor's Mansion.[10] Pettersen and Silverii have one child, a son, born in 2020.[11]
