Development

Boston Strangler was written and directed by Matt Ruskin for 20th Century Studios. The film is a co-production between Scott Free Productions and LuckyChap Entertainment, and is produced by Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh, Michael Pruss, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara. On October 4, 2021, Keira Knightley joined the cast.[1] In November 2021, Carrie Coon, Alessandro Nivola, Chris Cooper, and David Dastmalchian were added to the cast.[2][3] Robert John Burke and Morgan Spector were confirmed to star in early 2022.[4][5]

Filming

Ben Kutchins is the film's cinematographer.[6] Filming began on December 6, 2021, inside a house on 47 Statler Road in Belmont, Massachusetts, between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.[7] It served as the home of reporter Loretta McLaughlin.[8] The house's residents, Judy and David Duffy, said they "thrilled that so many people and community members were involved."[9] That same day, the Winn Brook Elementary School was transformed into the Cambridge Police Department for second unit filming.[7] The school was paid $5,000 to be in the film and was used between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (EST).[10][8] A tent was set up on school property to take breaks.[8] For the next two days, filming took place in the South End; scenes were shot on Dwight Street between Tremont Street and Shawmut Avenue.[8] On December 9, the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology was temporarily turned into a police headquarters for the shoot.[11][12] Between January 26 and January 27, 2022, the former Josephine M. Foster Elementary School at 30 Foster Road in Braintree was used as a set.[13] Filming also took place in Jamaica Plain, Lowell, Lynn, Malden, Roxbury, and Wellesley, Massachusetts.[8][14]

Several private driveways on Statler and Waterhouse Roads were rented to park 1960s vehicles. The Claflin Street parking lot in Belmont Center was also rented for the crew's personal vehicles. Several health procedures had to be followed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire crew was vaccinated and tested for the virus three times a week until production has concluded.[7] Steel Reel Catering was in charge of providing food for the entire cast and crew until February 2022.[8] Filming wrapped in March.[15]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on Hulu.[4]
