Production
In 1991, the first year the Big Nate comic was published, Peanuts executive producer Lee Mendelson purchased the option from Lincoln Peirce to make a 2D-animated Big Nate television series for Saturday Morning Cartoons at NBC, who "was paid $5,000 to write a quote-on-quote bible describing the characters and outlining a few story ideas". However, the day after this deal was finalized, NBC canceled all of their Saturday Morning Cartoons, sending the series into development hell.[6]
An animated Big Nate series was ultimately announced by Nickelodeon on February 19, 2020. Nickelodeon's executive vice president of animation production and development, Ramsey Naito, stated that she had wanted to adapt the Big Nate book series into an animated series for a long time.[1][3] The series was originally planned to premiere in September 2021.[2] However, in December 2021, with the casting, it was announced that it would premiere on Paramount+ in early 2022,[4] later specified as February 17.[5]
On March 24, 2022, the series was renewed for a second season.[7]

Francis warns Nate that if he gets another detention, he will be "gunted", meaning he will disappear just like every kid who gets five detentions in a week, ever since Nate's idol, trickster extraordinare Brad Gunter. Nate manages not to get any detentions until Friday, when he is introduced to new kid and troublemaker Brandon Carter. Nate is worried that if he tries to stop Brandon's exceptionally cruel pranks, he will be blamed for any damage and be gunted, but he is visited by an apparition of Brad, who tells him that those who are destined for awesomeness will never keep their heads down when people are in danger. Nate rescues Principal Nichols, and his friends reveal that "Brandon" is actually an escaped convict, and theorize that Nichols was so excited to have a rich kid attend the school he never even looked at his obviously fake file. After school, Brad appears on the hill, suggesting Nate's hallucination of him may have been real.

For Nate's birthday, his dad lets him use his credit card for anything under fifty dollars, but Nate exploits a loophole to buy as much as he wants, ultimately ending up 6,000 dollars in debt. Meanwhile, Marty helps Ellen overcome her claustrophobia so that she can pop out of the husky sculpture at the town's dog race, the Ididnotarod. Nate and his friends enter the race so they can use the prize money to pay off their debt, but Spitsy becomes distracted by the sculpture, ruining their chance. Fortunately, it turns out that one of Nate's other presents contained a rare misprinted stamp which can be sold to pay off their debt.
