Beidiao 990 has a deep-V shaped hull, and the entire ship is constructed of aluminum, the first of its kind in China. The high grade aluminum needed for the construction of the ship is supplied by Beijing Alumip Development Co., Ltd. (北京艾路浦科技发展有限公司). The name Beidiao (北调) 990 means North (Sea Fleet) Investigation (Ship) 990, and the ship is unique in that it also has a second name Dongyuan (东远) 01, meaning East Distant. Although capable being deployed as a platform for various missions such as surveillance, survey, and research, the ship is currently used as a troopship by the People's Liberation Army Navy (as of 2014) to rotate sailors and marines.
