Behera (surname)

Behera (Odia: ବେହେରା) is an Odia popular surname. The Behera is a synonym word of Nayak and Pradhan surname, which meaning is Chief or Leader. Historically it is designated to Gopal (Yadava caste)[1][2][3] and they are mostly used this surname in Odisha. Other than Gopals it is also used by Chasa and Utkala Brahmin.[4]

But now it is adopted by many lower castes like Keuta,[5]Kumbhara,Tanti, Patara, Chamara, Pano etc.

it is also adopted by Koli[6][7] people of Ganjam district, who were migrated from South India.
