The station was named after one of the founders of Melbourne, John Batman.[2]
The current island platform was provided in 1959, when the line was duplicated between Coburg and Fawkner stations.[1]
A siding that once existing for the former Lincoln Mills knitting works on Gaffney Street was provided in 1920,[1] and was abolished in 1970, along with the associated signal discs and posts.[1]
In 1982, a crossover at the station was abolished, along with a number of signals and levers.[1]
A disused signal box is located at the Up end of the station, which was provided in 1935, along with interlocked gates at the Gaffney Street level crossing.[1] The gates were replaced with boom barriers in the late 1990s, when the Upfield line was upgraded.
