Bartley P. Griffith

Bartley P. Griffith (born 1949) in Pittsburgh, is an American heart surgeon.[1][2] Internationally renowned for his works, he performed the first successful transplant of a genetically modified pig heart to a human on January 7, 2022. The recipient was 57-year-old David Bennett Sr. The procedure occurred at the University of Maryland Medical Center.[3] Due to complications, David Bennett Sr died on March 8, 2022.

The very first transplant of a pig's heart (not genetically modified) into a human was performed in 1997 by the Indian surgeon Dhaniram Baruah.[4] The patient, 32-year-old Purna Saikia, died after a week.
