Lawrence played as a forward for Longford in Tasmania and signed to play with Hawthorn in 1967, ultimately staying with Longford. He replaced Darrel Baldock at St Kilda after the Baldock returned to Tasmania. He was initially made a back pocket for poor performance, but returned to playing regularly.

He was selected as a back pocket in the St Kilda Team of the Century[1] and on the half back flank in the Tasmanian Team of the Century.[2]

Later he returned to the forward line.

He is the father of former St Kilda and Brisbane player Steven Lawrence.
