Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi

Dr. Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi (born on 22 April, 1951), is an influential Muslim and a scholar from Kerala.[1][2][3] He is one of the founders & the present Vice Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University.[4] He has authored and translated many books in various disciplines of Islamic studies and done many lectures across the globe.[5][6][7][8][9] He has been listed in The 500 Most Influential Muslims (also known as The Muslim 500), an annual publication compiled by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, Jordan, which ranks the most influential Muslims in the world.[10][2]

Birth and education

Nadwi was born at Kooriyad, in Malappuram district for Mohammed Jamaluddeen and Fathima Hajja. His father was widely known as a Muslim scholar and pious Sufi practitioner.[11] His early education was primarily from his grandfather Thenu Musliyar followed by some local Madrasa and government-run schools. After secondary level education, he got enrolled in Jamia Nooriyya Islamiyya  in 1972 and completed the course with the honorary title Moulawi Al-Fazil Al-Faizy in 1974.  He did the degree of ‘Afzal Al Ulama[12] in Arabic Language from the University of Calicut in 1979[13] and Diploma in Arabic Language Teaching from Government of Kerala in 1971.

He enrolled in Darul Uloom Nadwathul Ulama in 1981, at Lucknow and achieved his degree in ‘Alimiyya’ in Arabic Language and Islamic Studies in 1983. Then he graduated from Aligarh Muslim University with Master's in Arabic Literature in 1987.[14] Later he went to Egypt and attended Da’awa course by the Al Azhar University.

Nadwi did doctoral research studies about Imam Jalaluddin Suyuti and his contributions to Arabic literature with a special focus to Mazhar from the Dept of Arabic, University of Calicut in 1993. In 1996, he has been awarded with Post Doctoral fellowship by University of Calicut.

Academic contributions and activities

Nadwi is one of the founders of Darul Huda Islamic University and currently holds the post of Vice Chancellor of the University.[15][16] It was his thought to re-unite both religious and secular education under a single umbrella and accordingly, he devised, designed and implemented a comprehensive curriculum in the University.[17]
