Athletics at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Athletics is one of the core sports that will be held at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. As a founding sport, athletics has appeared consistently since its introduction at the 1911 Inter-Empire Games, the recognized precursor to the Commonwealth Games.[1]

The competition will take place between 30 July and 7 August 2022, spread across 59 events (including 13 para athletics disciplines).[2][3]

Schedule

Over the competition, there were 59 medal events including additional para-sport disciplines.

The programme features an expanded event set for para-athletes with the introduction of the 4 x 100 mixed Universal relay. This makes the Birmingham programme of athletics the largest, at 59 events, in the history of the Games.

Venue

Track and field events (including both race walks) will be held at the Alexander Stadium,[4] which is also the chosen venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.[5] The marathons will be held along a course that stretches between the city centre (specifically Smithfield / Victoria Square) and Bournville.[6][7]

Qualification (race walks)

Athletes entered for the 10,000 m race walks had to meet the following Minimum Participation Standards between 1 January 2021 and 27 June 2022:[8]

  • Men - 44:00 (or 1:30:00 over 20 km)
  • Women - 51:00 (or 1:45:00 over 20 km)

All selections are made from nations' open allocation quotas.
