He has been sentenced to life imprisonment until death.[1][2] In July 2001, he was acquitted of by the Supreme Court, which stated, "the Superintendent of Police, CBI had therefore not recorded the confessional statements in conformity with the provision of law and that therefore the confessional statements could not be considered as a substantive piece of evidence against the accused persons." Which shows hypocrisy involved in his case and false allegations[3][4]

He was released in 1999 for a short span of time.[5][6] In 2012, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court ruled that he must be imprisoned until death.[1] He earned his PhD in Islamic Studies in the prison, and had been working from another degree.[1] In 2016, India's Supreme Court rejected the proposition for releasing him.[7][8]

His wife Asiya Andrabi is also a Kashmiri sepratist leader and chairperson of banned human rights organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat.[9][10]
