Andrea Marcolongo

Andrea Marcolongo (born 17 January 1987) is an Italian essayist and writer.

Life

Marcolongo was born in Crema in 1987. She has a three-year degree in Classical Literature at the University of Milan and she also studied storytelling at Scuola Holden founded by Alessandro Baricco who was her partner at the time.

She is the former ghostwriter for Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and the Italian Democratic Party. She worked for them for 6 months, between December 2013 and the European elections held in May 2014.[1]

In 2015 she attended a one-week masterclass at “The Guardian” and also translated from ancient Greek  "Palamede, l'eroe cancellato" that Alessandro Baricco staged in 2016.[2]

In 2016 she moved to Sarajevo where she wrote her first two books and got married.[3] She currently lives in Paris.[4]

Books

The Ingenious Language

Marcolongo became known for her book La lingua geniale (The Ingenious Language - nine epic reasons to love Greek),[5] which advocates reasons for learning Ancient Greek. It became a bestseller and has been translated into several languages. As of February 2018 the book had sold 200,000 copies. The Guardian said that Marcolongo makes a "convincing case for [Greek's] singularly expressive power" and she shows "us new ways of seeing and understanding the world."[6] However, the book has also drawn criticism from the classicist community due to numerous errors and blatant shortcomings in its content.[7]

The Hero's Part

Her second book La misura eroica (The Hero's Part) is a narrative essay and draws inspiration from the myth Jason and the Golden Fleece.[8]

Annalena Benini wrote that "Marcolongo went through the Greek language to get to the Greek spirit, to build her cheerfulness".[9]
