Background
Alura was released just two months after Sweet Trip's 1998 debut album, Halica,[2] and only four months after their first EP, Fish Remixes & Versions.[3] It is notably more dance music-oriented than any of their other releases, with the band deciding that it would be fun to create tracks akin to the electronic music and Miami bass they had grown up listening to in their resident Bay area.[4] The band aimed to create a release that could be played by DJs at clubs and raves, in part due to their obsession with raves and dance parties.[4]
The three tracks present on the original LP release of Alura were some of the first created by the band using a computer and a Midi-sequencer, using an Atari computer with an early version of Cubase on floppy disc.[4] The CD bonus track, "Kate", was the last song released by Sweet Trip recorded on a TASCAM 4-track,[4] which the band had used to record the entirety of Halica on.[5]
The album's cover art features altered photos of gear that the band had used in the recording of Alura, due to being thrilled with their recent acquisition of more gear such as synths and samplers.[4] In 2022, an "Expanded Edition" re-release was announced by Sweet Trip's label Darla Records,[4] featuring new cover art, and tracks previously only found on Darla compilations[6][7] or uploaded to Valerie Cooper's SoundCloud.[8]
