Alfred Curzon, 4th Baron Scarsdale

Alfred Nathaniel Holden Curzon, 4th Baron Curzon JP (12 July 1831 – 23 March 1916), was a British aristocrat and clergyman. He was the father of George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, who was the Conservative Viceroy of India and British Foreign Secretary.

Life

The Curzon family is of Norman origin. Alfred, who was the son of Alfred Curzon and of Sophia Holden, was the grandson of Baron Scarsdale. Alfred Curzon was educated at Rugby School and at the University of Oxford. He in 1856 succeeded his uncle to the title, and to 11,000 acres (about 4,450 hectares) of land. He in 1856 married Blanche Senhouse (d. 1875). He was ordained into the Church of England and he subsequently became Rector of Kedleston for fifty-six years, and a Justice of the Peace. The marriage produced four sons, the eldest of whom was George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, who subsequently was the Conservative Viceroy of India and British Foreign Secretary, and seven daughters, one of whom died in infancy.
