Ai debuted as a musician through BMG Japan in 2000, though which she released a single album, My Name Is Ai. In 2002, Ai switched labels to Def Jam Japan, a subsidiary of Universal Music Japan, and released her second studio album in 2003, Original Ai.[1] In 2005, Ai released the ballad "Story", which became one of the most digitally successful songs of all time in Japan, becoming 3× million certified for ringtones and million for downloads to cellphones.

Ai remained with Universal until 2010, releasing seven studio albums with the label. Ai signed to EMI Music Japan in June 2011, and released her international debut and ninth album Independent (2012), led by the single "Happiness".[2] In September 2012, Universal Music Group purchased EMI Music, leading Ai to return to Universal as an artist under the newly created EMI Records Japan sub-label.[3] She released her tenth album under EMI Japan, Moriagaro, in 2013.

Ai's eleventh studio album, Wa to Yo, was released in 2017 under EMI Records and served as her second international album. In November 2019, her first international greatest hits album, Kansha!!!!! - Thank You for 20 Years New and Best was released. In July 2020, she released her first extended play, It's All Me, Vol. 1. It's follow-up, It's All Me, Vol. 2 was released in February 2021.

In June 2021, Ai's previous releases with Universal Sigma, Island Records and Def Jam Japan were made available for digital streaming outside of Asia.[4] Her twelfth studio album, Dream, was released in February 2022.
